iPhone 18 Pro or 17 Pro? We compare camera, chip, battery, and price, and tell you who should upgrade and who should keep their phone.
Short answer: if your iPhone 17 Pro still works well, you can probably skip the 18 Pro. If you own an iPhone 15 Pro or older, or you care most about camera and battery, the new phone makes more sense.
What changed
| iPhone 17 Pro | iPhone 18 Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting US price | $1,099 | $1,199 |
| Chip | A19 Pro | A20 Pro (2nm) |
| Main camera | fixed aperture | variable aperture, f/1.48 to f/4 |
| Video playback (Pro / Pro Max) | 33 / 39 hours | up to 36 / 45 hours |
| Other | – | smaller Dynamic Island, Apple’s C2 modem, 2TB option |
The new camera lets the lens physically widen or narrow its opening. In practice, that mainly helps in low light and for close-up shots with a blurred background. Reviewers found daytime shots look much the same. The new phones are also heavier than the previous generation.
Price in Nigeria
The US price rose by $100. In Nigeria the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro is listed from about ₦2.27 million (see our price guide), so the real cost of upgrading is that price minus whatever you get for your old phone. [Add: what a used 17 Pro sells for locally, if you have checked.]
Who should upgrade?
- iPhone 17 Pro owners: probably not. The difference is modest, and the money is better kept unless night photography is your priority.
- iPhone 15 Pro and older: yes. Chip speed, battery life, and camera will all feel noticeably better.
- Heavy gamers and video editors: the faster chip may help, but the 17 Pro is already powerful.
- People who want the longest battery: the Pro Max is the one to look at.
What about iOS?
iOS 27 arrived on September 14. Most recent iPhones can run it, so you do not need a new phone just for the software. Check Apple’s compatibility list for your model.
